Love and Self-Mastery

A Poetry of Mist – Image c 2012 Lynda Lehmann – Shot in Acadia National Park

What is the glue that binds the universe?  What human attributes or qualities bring order and warmth out of a vast, chaotic and impersonal cosmos?

Only love and self-mastery move us out of both cosmic and personal chaos into the realm of warmth, insight, growth and joy.  Without self-knowledge, we cannot have self-mastery.  And self-knowledge exacts its price.  But it’s a price we have to pay to move from disappointment, dysfunction, and sadness into the realm of inclusion, connectedness and joy.   Self-knowledge is the steering wheel of our Ship of Self, and only we are at the helm.

Direct your fate and stay the course, through all the storms that may blow across the sea of your life.  And know that self-knowledge is achievable, and self-mastery will eventually follow.  Then, when you can say you really know yourself, you will have wandered into the sphere of love, which makes all things possible–and all things bearable.  Indeed, love can transmute sorrow and pain into joy.

Without the light of self-knowledge and self-mastery, we cannot truly love ourselves.  If we don’t love ourselves, we cannot truly love others.  And we will remain forever in a dim and dank fog of unenlightened existence.  Attaining self-mastery is a challenge, like trying to see the forest through the trees, on a mist-shrouded lake.  But we must keep searching, moving, aspiring.  And if we persevere, the light will shine through.

About Lynda Lehmann

I'm an abstract painter and photographer with a passion for color and the forms of nature. Even as a child, I felt awed by the wonders of nature. As an adult, I know that my love of beauty has inspired my life. My photography is realistic, but my paintings are abstract. In painting, I'm drawn to subjects of ambiguity and mystery, more than to recognizable scenes, and I love the freedom and musicality of abstract work. To me, it's more fun to see 'what isn't' than to see 'what is.' I have shown my art in numerous juried group and solo shows in the New York area. You can view my paintings, nature photography and digital art at my sites. Please visit my "Peripheral Vision" blog at to see a listing of my art sites and links to my articles and writing about creative process. I'm now selling my art on a wide of array of great Zazzle products, and you can find them at my five shops, with more to come!
